Zac Sheds His Disney Skin

Zac Efron

There are worse ways to lose your Disney image than these shots in the April “Interview” magazine.  The shots are taken by Mikael Jansson and are really very tasteful and beautiful.  The black and white adds a classic look.  The dirt adds some grit which any aspiring actor (particularly from Disney) really needs.  This is a wise transition and one that other Disney stars should consider.  Keep your clothes on and make it classy.

Another Role For Zac

Zac Efron

There’s so much news about Mr. Efron lately that this blog is slowly but surely becoming the Zac Blog.  But, he seems a cool enough guy and I like passing on good news (well maybe not the appendectomy, but it’s mostly good news).

Not too long ago everyone was predicting he had a bright future in film and it looks like they were right.  Today it would appear that he’s got yet another movie in the works.

Zac Efron (“High School Musical” films) will star in Me and Orson Welles, an adaptation of the period coming-of-age novel by Robert Kaplow that Richard Linklater will direct, says The Hollywood Reporter.

Set in 1937, the story centers on a high school student (Efron) who, while strolling the streets of New York, happens upon the yet-to-open Mercury Theatre and is noticed by its mercurial founder, Orson Welles. The man lands a bit part in “Julius Caesar,” the production that catapulted Welles to the top, and spends the next week learning about life and love.

Newcomer Christian McKay will play Welles. Ben Chaplin (The Water Horse: Legend of the Deep) has been cast as English film and stage actor George Coulouris.

The script was written by Holly Gent Palmo, who was a production coordinator on Linklater’s Dazed and Confused, and Vince Palmo, who was first assistant director on several of the helmer’s films.

Efron then will shoot “Welles” in mid-February and March in such locales as New York, London and the Isle of Man, whose Gaiety Theatre is being booked for the production.

Zac’s Missing Something…

Zac Efron

He’s missing his appendix as of last night.  I’m sure he won’t miss the little trouble-maker.  It was removed in an emergency surgery.  Hope he’s feeling much better now.  Of course, if you are on the internet today (and you must be) you already know that because every celebrity site and every news site is carrying the story.  I just wanted to chime in with my “Get Well Soon”.

Zac Gets Into Character

Zac Efron

While I like his real hair, this photo made me smile.  (He’s working on his movie “Seventeen”).  I hope the scenes take place in the 70s ’cause I remember when guys who wore their hair this way were considered very cool.  If not, then somebody needs to have a stern talk to wardrobe.

Zac Efron Wins Another Award

Zac Efron (High School Musical 2)

At the Ninth Family Television Awards, Zac Efron, 20, won the best actor award for “High School Musical 2”, which earned best movie musical honors.  The ceremony took place at the Beverly Hilton in Beverly Hills, California Wednesday night.  By my count (which could very well be wrong) that brings the total to:
1 Family Television Award
3 Teen Choice Awards
1 Hollywood Film Award
1 Young Hollywood Award
Shoosh, did I miss any?  That’s a lot of awards for someone who’s been in the business maybe 5 years.
America Ferrera won best actress for “Ugly Betty”.

America Ferrera (Ugly Betty)

Also honored were Kyle Chandler and Zachary Levi.  Congrats to all of them.

Oh, the Hideous Trophies

Mtv EMA Award 2007 (shudder)

I was noticing the other night just how hideous that Mtv European Music trophy is.  It looks like a horrible little bobble award.  I really didn’t know what most of the award trophies look like, so I did a little searching and have come to the conclusion that most awards are fairly revolting to look at.  I’m sure that the winners are deserving and grateful for these awards but you’d think the trophies could be ever so slightly more attractive.  No wonder so many celebs keep these things in the bathroom and other places that are not directly in sight.

The Emmy

Now while this isn’t hideous, I wanted to compare and contrast this trophy with the one pictured above.  I can understand that MTV would not want something as sedate as the Emmy, but the bobble-trophy?

The Tony

Let’s face it, this is not an attractive trophy.  Looks like it was sold by the Franklin Mint (and was not a very good seller).

The Oscar

This is probably the most prestigious award in the industry and yet the trophy just makes me say “meh”.  Surely for an award of this magnitude, someone could come up with a more exciting design.

The Clio

This award for advertising is not half bad but is far too reminiscent of  Oscar and Emmy.  Something original would be nice, but it is an advertising award.

Jimmy Kimmel holding an AMA trophy (American Music Awards)

Again, it could be worse, but lacking creativity.

Golden Globe

Oh good heavens.  This is revolting.  Is this really the Golden Globe?  Maybe it’s a Golden Globe from the 50s or something.  Someone tell me this is not the Golden Globe that my beloved Bill Nighy won.

Oh snap!  It is.

The Razzie
A gruesome little trophy but considering what the award is for, I suppose it’s appropriate.

The Aurora (Film and Video Excellence)
Same shit different award

The SAG Award

This one has promise except for the fact that it looks like someone tried too hard with it.  However, considering that most trophies look like someone didn’t try hard enough, this one gets a pass.

The Saturn Award (Sci-Fi/Fantasy Films)

Shoosh, this one had potential and just look at it!  I can’t begin to describe my disappointment.

MTV Movie Award

This is pretty good.  It’s a bit funky, and that’s to be expected from MTV.  Granted it’s a 2002 trophy but they’re all similar.

MTV Music Award

The moonman is a classic.  I’ve got nothing bad to say about this trophy.

The Grammy

Again a classic.  I wouldn’t refuse to display it, but I’m falling asleep just looking at it.

Keith Urban with the Country Music Award(s)

O.K. We’re getting better here.  These are interesting to look at and somewhat modern however, I’m not digging the medallions.

Mary J. Blige with Billboard Music Award  (Apparently, Billboard isn’t doing a music awards this year)

So what the hell is it?  I can’t even tell.

Helen Mirren with the BAFTA (British Film Award)

She looks horrified.  So am I.  I can see that some effort went into the mask but coupled with that awful block of a base, it brings us all down…way down.

Academy of Canadian Cinema and Television Award aka Genie Award

Oh Good Lord, what is that?  Of all the awards I found in my searches, this is by far the most awful.  It’s a bit on the phallic side complete with some really tiny harbls (if you know what I mean).

Zac Efron with the Teen Choice Award

So if the Genie is the worst, the Teen Choice award has to be the best.  I suppose it takes up a lot of mantle space, but still.  How cool is a surfboard?

Zac Gets Into Charity

Zac Efron

I knew he had it in him.

From AccessHollywood.com
:  Actress Claire Danes and U.S. Senator Bill Bradley in New York and Actor Zac Efron in Los Angeles, announce the nationwide expansion of DonorsChoose.org, a revolutionary non-profit organization designed to fulfill classroom needs and foster innovation in public schools.

Danes, Efron and Bradley are attracting media attention to DonorsChoose.org, which for the past seven years has proven its model for channeling much-needed resources (like books, art supplies, technology and field trips) to deserving students at public schools in eight states and four major U.S. Cities.
On November 15th, DonorsChoose.org expands its model to all 50 states, matching classroom needs, posted online by teachers, with individuals from all walks of life who believe in supporting American students with the resources they need to succeed.

Since 2000, DonorsChoose.org has channeled $14 million worth of books, art supplies, technology, field trips and other resources to students in need. Just as eBay enables buyers and sellers to collectively determine the value of a product, DonorsChoose.org lets the people decide which projects should get funded, said eBay Founder Pierre Omidyar.

Celebrity Photographer: Matthew Rolston

I love his work in Rolling Stone so thought I might look him up to see what else he’s done.  I’ll let wikipedia do the talking.

From Wikipedia:  Over the years, Rolston’s still photography work for Harper’s Bazaar, Andy Warhol’s Interview Magazine and Rolling Stone (among many others) has highlighted his visual panache and control of detail.  Rolston’s photographs have been exhibited at prestigious galleries. Locations include locations across the United States, Europe, Japan, and at museums, including The Whitney Museum of American Art in New York City and the Smithsonian Institute in Washington, D.C. In addition, a collection of his photographs, “Big Pictures”, was published in 1991 by Bullfinch Press. Soon, Rolston expanded his savvy for classic composition and style by working as a director of music videos for artists including TLC, En Vogue, Madonna, Christina Aguilera, Janet Jackson, Lenny Kravitz, Poe, Dido, Garbage, Sugababes, Jody Watley, Hilary Duff and Beyoncé Knowles.

I couldn’t put it better myself.  For a very nice website with lots of photos, go to his homepage:

Keira Knightley

Jennifer Love Hewitt

Zac Efron’s now famous Rolling Stone Cover (You can actually buy this in poster size at art.com…amazing work)

And again

Jonny Depp (another now famous photo)

Angelina Jolie

I think if I were trying to make it in Hollywood, I would have one of these amazing photographers take my pics because they really add an artistic eye and make everyone look ethereal.

Happy Birthday, Zac!

Zac Efron

I just wanted to be the first (ha!ha!ha! yeah, as if he hasn’t received birthday wishes from all over the world starting last month) to wish Zac Efron a Happy Birthday.  From everything I’ve seen so far, he’s one of the nicest guys in the biz.  Few celebs his age keep it together so well.  Congrats to Mr. & Mrs. Efron for a job well done and a fine 20 year old.
