Juno Will Be Dragged Into Hell

Ellen Page

Rumor has it that Ellen Page of the critically acclaimed “Juno” will star in Sam Raimi’s return to horror “Dragged Into Hell”.  So far all I know is that the movie is about a supernatural curse.  But I love Sam Raimi (and maybe Bruce Campbell will make an appearance) and Ellen Page is smokin’ hot right now.  Should be a good combination.

2007 Scream Awards

So, I watched the 2007 Scream Awards on Spike last night.  No surprise there, huh?  There were some great clips for upcoming movies including “Beowulf”  There were a few stand-out moments I wanted to mention.  First up, Bruce Campbell…

Bruce Campbell

Bruce Campbell had the best speech of the evening.  It’s always a thrill to see him but he was so funny last night slamming the conventional awards ceremonies for not including horror/fantasy/sci-fi.  He was there to present the award for Best Horror Movie which went to “28 Weeks Later”.  Apparently he’s directing a film now called “My Name is Bruce” where he is mistaken for his character Ash from the Evil Dead trilogy and forced to fight a real monster in a small town in Oregon.  I cannot wait for this one.

Rodrigo Santoro as Xerxes

Rodrigo Santoro won an award for his Xerxes character in “300”.  (I believe that may have been for ultimate scream?)

Rodrigo Santoro

They sure had to ugly him up for the movie.

I thought it was a pretty good show and enjoyed the Alice Cooper/Rob Zombie/Slash finishing number.  Ozzy Osbourne was in good form last night as well.

Sidekicks are So Fashionable These Days

Sidekicks are the crucial comedic element in so many television shows and movies.  They have the terrific reactions and are to the hero what you or I might be to the hero;  frightened, reluctant, incredulous, and sometimes, dead-weight.  I’ve listed just a few of my favorite sidekicks here though I welcome all suggestions as I am absolutely certain I have neglected to mention several wonderful sidekicks.

Sock from “Reaper” played by Tyler Labine

Sam’s sidekcik played by Brett Harrison

Tyler has imdb credits back to 1991 (mostly tv) so he’s been around awhile (and I thought I recognized him).

Sam and Sock together in the pilot episode

Danny Butterman (Nick Frost) (left) as Nicholas Angel’s (Simon Pegg) sidekick in “Hot Fuzz”

Nick has been around longer but with fewer roles.  However, I think he’s got some momentum and we’ll be seeing a lot more of him in the future.

Gus (Dule Hill) as Shawn Spencer’s (James Roday) sidekick on “Psyche”

Randy (Ethan Suplee) as Earl’s (Jason Lee) sidekick on “My Name is Earl”

Sam Axe (Bruce Campbell) as Michael Weston’s (Jeffrey Donovan) sidekick on “Burn Notice”.

I can’t say enough about Bruce Campbell’s sidekick abilities.  They are top-o-the-line.  In fact, they are so good he should probably have his own series.

Smokey (Chris Tucker) as Craig’s (Ice Cube) sidekick in “Friday”.  Wow, Smokey is absolutely one of the best ever.

Niles (David Hyde Pierce) as Frasier’s (Kelsey Grammer) sidekick on “Frasier”.  Technically, Niles is his brother but he’s still one of the greatest sidekicks of all time.

Yes, I do believe that the era of the sidekick is upon us.

Two of A Kind

Jeffrey Donovan and Bruce Campbell with Sharon Gless and Gabrielle Anwar

I love sarcasm.  I am, myself, very sarcastic.  This makes me a big Bruce Campbell fan.  I’ve purchased and read his books (which are filled with that lovely sarcastic wit) “If Chins Could Kill:  Confessions of a B-Movie Actor” and “Make Love the Bruce Campbell Way”.  I even stay in the room when his Old Spice commercial is on.  He’s playing lounge lizard while singing Duran Duran’s “Hungry Like the Wolf”.  See it here:  http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Yg6bZSM48vU.  Obviously, I love those B-movies where we all first met Bruce;  the Evil Dead series and “Army of Darkness” (technically part of the series).  And we all “shop smart, shop S-Mart” and keep it “groovy” while wasting “she-bitches”.

Now, thanks to Bruce Campbell, I have become aware of yet another sarcastic talent that is quickly moving up in my book of totally watchable people.  The star of “Burn Notice” is Jeffrey Donovan and while one has to stay on one’s toes to keep up with Bruce Campbell in the dry wit department, Jeffrey is a master.  The narration he provides for the show is good enough that you could enjoy the show just fine without actually seeing it (which comes in handy when the your blind dog has found his way into the bathroom but can’t seem to find his way out causing mass hysteria among all household pets).  You truly have to appreciate the style of this show, but if you’re like me, you don’t ever want to miss an episode.  The show also features Sharon Gless and Gabrielle Anwar, both of whom do a stellar job playing against these two “hard to follow” acts.

Here’s a synopsis of the show:  When a spy gets fired, he doesn’t get a call from human resources and a gold watch.  In Michael’s case, they jeopardize his life, freeze his bank accounts, dump him in Miami, and flag him on every government list known to man.  They can’t take away his skills or what’s in his head, so they take away his assets and his resources to make sure he can never work again.  They burn him.  http://www.usanetwork.com/series/burnnotice/

Yup.  That about sums it up.
