Lookin’ Good

Amy Winehouse (a recent photo)

I’m just saying…credit where credit is due.  I don’t know what she’s doing these days but it’s working.

My Personal Grammy Highlights

Cher looking stunning

Last night I watched the Grammys (and the Baftas - the remote was heating up).  And while 30STM was not up for an award this year…alas…it was still a good show with lots more flash than I expected.  The first high point for me was Daft Punk and Kanye West singing “Stronger”.

Kanye West

This was a very good performance.  As you can see from the photos, the stage was done up ala “Tron” which was just perfect for the song.  Very cool.  Kanye followed this up with a sad tribute to his Mom.  It was touching and while I loved the upbeat “Stronger” I was moved by the tribute.

The next high point for me was the performance by Beyonce and Tina Turner.

Beyonce and Tina Turner

They performed “Proud Mary” and while Beyonce can truly belt out a song, she kept it in check to allow Tina the thunder.  They were both wonderful together and it was obvious that they respect and enjoy the talents of one another.

My next high point was the duet by Josh Groban and Andrea Bocelli.

Talk about some talented people tonight.  (Herbie Hancock did some fabulous piano work at the Grammys too).  These two men sang some stunning opera together.  I was aware that they could both sing but was not aware that they would perform so well together.  Amazing.

Last but not least….

Amy Winehouse

Amy has had her share of issues this year and it was obvious from her performance that she is missing her husband, Blake.  She was fantastic.  I’m usually ready for some breakdown in an Amy Winehouse performance because she’s so unpredictable, but I like her voice and was pleased to hear her do so well last night.  To top that off, she won a Grammy for “Song of the Year” (I believe that was the category) for “Rehab” and her reaction was priceless.  She was completely blindsided by the win and her speechlessness and demure acceptance was beautiful.

All in all, it was a good night on the Grammys (and I can’t say that every year).  The pictures on this post are from Rollingstone.com and there are many more to look at on their site.

Celebrity Photographer: Max Vadukul

Max Vadukul

He’s taken dozens of photos of Beyonce (I suspect she is his muse).  They’re great photos and if I were Beyonce I’d stick with him.  He’s famous for satirical and wacky imagery influenced largely by cartoons, silent movies and British media.  Here are a few samples and you can see more here: http://www.art-dept.com/artists/vadukul/.

Troubled? Maybe. Talented? Absolutely.

There’s little doubt that Amy Winehouse has her issues.  Don’t we all?  However, I think it’s terrible to focus so much on the aspects of her life that are negative.  This lady has an amazing voice and a very cool retro style.  Now you can say that if the press picks on her for her lifestyle they may save her from herself.  But I don’t think the press is a qualified therapist.  It’s true that if she doesn’t pull herself together, we may lose her much too soon (as has happened with many of our favorite entertainers).  But is it really fair to point out every little thing?  It’s not like she’s begging for the attention the way some celebs do.  Yes, she may misbehave a bit in concert (so did Jim Morrison - a lot).  Yes, she may drink too much (that’s par for the course).  My point, though it’s taking me far too long to get there, is that her personal life may be a bit screwed up (so is mine if we’re being honest) but we don’t do ourselves or Ms. Winehouse any favors by focusing on the negative and should just enjoy what we have been given - some lovely music from a talented lady.
