Denzel Donates

Denzel Washington

Denzel Washington has donated a cool one million to Wiley College (in his film “The Great Debaters) for the college’s debate team.  Very nice, Denzel.

Six Degrees.org

Kevin Bacon

I love Kevin Bacon and his wife, Kyra Sedgwick and they’ve both done a lot for charity, this is just the next logical step.

From Hollyscoop.com:

It’s a known fact that everyone is six degrees away from Kevin Bacon. Try it. You are too. Kevin’s turned that game into a charity called sixdegrees.org.

If there is anything you read about or have some kind of an experience in your life that affects you and you’re interested in making a donation or trying to find a way to help out, volunteer, etc., sixdegrees.org will guide you toward organizations that are supporting any cause.

It makes it super easy because there are over a million causes on the site to get the ball rolling. And if you’re interested in seeing what celebrities are concerned about, we also have a pretty large and impressive group of well-known people and you can often make a donation to their causes.

The third element of it is you could become a celebrity for your own cause and create what we call a badge, which is a little kind of card that adds you or a picture of you and links to organizations that you’re supporting, and you could talk about why it means something to you.

Where’s PETA Now?

Mary J. Blige and Patti Labelle

It’s easy enough to go after Mary-Kate and Ashley Olsen but PETA is suspiciously quiet when it comes to some tougher women out there.  Recently, Mary J. Blige and Patti LaBelle were spotted together (in fur from head to toe) and nary a PETA comment.  Don’t get me wrong, I love Mary J. Blige and Patti LaBelle (not a big fan of fur though), but I have to wonder why PETA is picking on just a few easy targets.  I’m betting because Mary and Patti would kick their asses.

Another Cool Trick

Make your own glow sticks!  Empty all but 1/4 inch of Mountain Dew from a plastic bottle.  Add to that a small pinch of baking soda and 3 capfuls of hydrogen peroxide.  Shake gently and voila - your own glow stick!

Mmm, Good.

I found this whilst surfing today.  I think it’s a great idea and plan to make some delicious homemade marshmallows for Christmas.  Again, click the pic to “go there”.

“Rite” Up My Alley

Scene from “The Exorcism of Emily Rose”

NEW YORK (Hollywood Reporter) - New Line Cinema has taken possession of “The Rite,” the true story of an American priest who studied at an exorcism school in Italy .

The project is based on the nonfiction book “The Rite: The Making of a Modern Day Exorcist,” which is set for publication by Doubleday in early 2009.

The book’s author, Rome-based journalist Matt Baglio, was allowed to follow a young priest during months of training with a senior exorcist at a school affiliated with the Vatican .

Although the book is not finished and Michael Petroni’s screenplay won’t be completed until after the Hollywood writers strike, the film is expected to include scenes of exorcisms based on the priest’s experiences.

Petroni is a natural fit for the material, having written screenplays involving the Catholic Church (“The Dangerous Lives of Altar Boys”) and the supernatural (the upcoming “Possession”).

Shaun White is Not Busted

Shaun White

Look, Shaun is a typical 21 year old.  Given his current status, I’m actually amazed and impressed that he doesn’t get into the kind of trouble other people his age get into.  In this instance, it appears he had a little fun in a resort by setting off a fire extinguisher.  I’ve done so much worse in my day.

From AP:  BRECKENRIDGE, Colo. - A security video and shoe prints led to Olympic snowboarder Shaun White, who was accused of setting off a fire extinguisher at a ski resort, though there was no fire, police said. A police report said a security camera recorded someone setting off the extinguisher in a game room Friday at the Beaver Run Resort in Breckenridge, a ski town about 60 miles west of Denver.  White’s clothes and shoes appeared to match the person on the video, and his shoes matched footprints left in the powder from the fire extinguisher, the report said.  White, 21, dubbed “The Flying Tomato” for his red hair, was cited on a charge of second-degree criminal tampering. He was ordered to appear in municipal court on March 10.  The report said White’s breath smelled of alcohol when police spoke with him.  Repeated calls to White’s telephone in Carlsbad, Calif., yielded a busy signal Tuesday.  Also Friday, he was questioned by deputies about a stolen 2000 Audi recovered outside the resort “because he was in the vicinity of the car,” Summit County sheriff’s spokeswoman Paulette Horr said. White was ruled out as a suspect.  “He wasn’t arrested. All we did was interview him,” she said.  White won the gold medal in the snowboard halfpipe in the 2006 Olympics.

Clash of the Choirs Day Three

Michael Bolton

Last night Michael Bolton’s New Haven Connecticut choir was eliminated.  Kelly Rowland’s choir (eliminated in the first round) sang a nice opening.

For the first round Patti LaBelle’s Philadelphia choir performed “Jesus Take the Wheel”.  They are consistently a good choir but I wasn’t surprised by anything they did.  That may be a good thing.  Nick Lachey’s Cincinnati choir performed “Flight of the Bumblebee” acapella.  It was amazing and had to be heard to be fully appreciated.  Blake Shelton’s Oklahoma City choir sang “Home”.  This was a very nice performance complete with some well time “stompin’” and “clappin’”.  There were short but effective solos and the group sounded great together.  They injected more emotion into this offering than they had in previous performances and this one brought them up to the emotional level of Patti LaBelle’s group.

For the second round each choir performed a Christmas song.  Team LaBelle sang “The Most Wonderful Time of the Year”.  It was a good performance but didn’t get great until the end.  Team Lachey sang “All I Want For Christmas” and the group did a wonderful job with some intricate harmonies.  Team Shelton did “Joy To The World” which was a nice arrangement of the classical Christmas song and the Three Dog Night song.  It was the first religious offering and was appropriate for the competition.  They wrapped it up with a lovely ending.

For the last round each choir backed their choir director performing a song they are known for.  Patti LaBelle sang “Somewhere Over the Rainbow”.  You could definitely see why Patti is a legend.  There was an exceptionally strong finish by both Patti and her choir.  Nick Lachey performed “What’s Left of Me”.  Again, his choir worked some nice harmonies and Nick was on his game.  Blake Shelton performed “This Can’t Be Good”.  This is a fun song with some really funny bits.  The choir added a touch of soul to his country song and a nice vocal skat section.

Tonight we see which two teams are eliminated to award the winner of the competition.
