Oh, the Hideous Trophies

Mtv EMA Award 2007 (shudder)

I was noticing the other night just how hideous that Mtv European Music trophy is.  It looks like a horrible little bobble award.  I really didn’t know what most of the award trophies look like, so I did a little searching and have come to the conclusion that most awards are fairly revolting to look at.  I’m sure that the winners are deserving and grateful for these awards but you’d think the trophies could be ever so slightly more attractive.  No wonder so many celebs keep these things in the bathroom and other places that are not directly in sight.

The Emmy

Now while this isn’t hideous, I wanted to compare and contrast this trophy with the one pictured above.  I can understand that MTV would not want something as sedate as the Emmy, but the bobble-trophy?

The Tony

Let’s face it, this is not an attractive trophy.  Looks like it was sold by the Franklin Mint (and was not a very good seller).

The Oscar

This is probably the most prestigious award in the industry and yet the trophy just makes me say “meh”.  Surely for an award of this magnitude, someone could come up with a more exciting design.

The Clio

This award for advertising is not half bad but is far too reminiscent of  Oscar and Emmy.  Something original would be nice, but it is an advertising award.

Jimmy Kimmel holding an AMA trophy (American Music Awards)

Again, it could be worse, but lacking creativity.

Golden Globe

Oh good heavens.  This is revolting.  Is this really the Golden Globe?  Maybe it’s a Golden Globe from the 50s or something.  Someone tell me this is not the Golden Globe that my beloved Bill Nighy won.

Oh snap!  It is.

The Razzie
A gruesome little trophy but considering what the award is for, I suppose it’s appropriate.

The Aurora (Film and Video Excellence)
Same shit different award

The SAG Award

This one has promise except for the fact that it looks like someone tried too hard with it.  However, considering that most trophies look like someone didn’t try hard enough, this one gets a pass.

The Saturn Award (Sci-Fi/Fantasy Films)

Shoosh, this one had potential and just look at it!  I can’t begin to describe my disappointment.

MTV Movie Award

This is pretty good.  It’s a bit funky, and that’s to be expected from MTV.  Granted it’s a 2002 trophy but they’re all similar.

MTV Music Award

The moonman is a classic.  I’ve got nothing bad to say about this trophy.

The Grammy

Again a classic.  I wouldn’t refuse to display it, but I’m falling asleep just looking at it.

Keith Urban with the Country Music Award(s)

O.K. We’re getting better here.  These are interesting to look at and somewhat modern however, I’m not digging the medallions.

Mary J. Blige with Billboard Music Award  (Apparently, Billboard isn’t doing a music awards this year)

So what the hell is it?  I can’t even tell.

Helen Mirren with the BAFTA (British Film Award)

She looks horrified.  So am I.  I can see that some effort went into the mask but coupled with that awful block of a base, it brings us all down…way down.

Academy of Canadian Cinema and Television Award aka Genie Award

Oh Good Lord, what is that?  Of all the awards I found in my searches, this is by far the most awful.  It’s a bit on the phallic side complete with some really tiny harbls (if you know what I mean).

Zac Efron with the Teen Choice Award

So if the Genie is the worst, the Teen Choice award has to be the best.  I suppose it takes up a lot of mantle space, but still.  How cool is a surfboard?

Who Is That Pretty Little Girl?

Kate Bush

I would tell you all about Kate Bush (if you don’t know her) but it would take pages and pages.  Go to wikipedia and read up about Kate because she is truly one of the century’s most unique songwriters/artists and there is still no one who does it like she does it.  Or better yet, go to youtube for a sample of why she is considered such a genius.  There are lots of videos to choose from but I linked “Babooshka” because the song really showcases the vocals Kate is so famous for.  You can also see a real flare for the theatrical in this video.  She was one of the first woman to make extensive use of videos.

Have You Been Buying “Red”?

I know most of you have heard about the campaign (PRODUCT) RED.  These are items for purchase like cell phones, handbags, etc. where a portion of the profit goes to fight HIV/AIDS in Africa.  Bono and Bobby Shriver started the campaign.

I recently managed to buy a marc ecko handbag which I love, but haven’t been able to find much in the red products in my area.  Anyone else managing to support the cause?

Colin Farrell is a Great Guy

Colin Farrell shows off his prized kebab gold card at Abrakebabra.

He was recently at The Fourth ‘Abrakebabra for Childline’ day, which was held at Abrakebabra restaurants nationwide in Donnybrook, Ireland .

I love Colin and this is the reason why.  Sure he’s a talented actor, but when all is said and done, he does more good on this planet supporting all these charities and with his spectacular RAKs (Random Acts of Kindness) than any film he might be in can do.
